How Do I Know I’m Choosing the Right Contractor to Build My Custom Home

Part 3
How Do I Know I’m Choosing the Right Contractor to Build My Custom Home

In the third post of the “Choosing the Right Contractor”series we’re going to discuss the idea of cost. We’re often asked how much a completely custom home will cost. The answer to that question is not a simple one. Because, when we use the word cost, often times we’re looking for a price. And items with a low price, often have the highest lifetime costs. As the saying goes – you get what you pay for. Similarly – you don’t get what you don’t pay for. And this couldn’t be more true when it comes to home building.

In recent years, the cost of construction materials has risen as high as 20%! Some contractors, in an effort to not advertise the prices needed to cover such increases, have adopted what we at Birch & Beam deem to be less than honest advertising practices. If you’re discussing a completely custom home with your contractor and they are quoting you prices of $100 per square foot – be sure to ask them for a clear scope of work outlining what is included in that number. These days $100 a square foot may get you a house, but it will not get you permits, excavation, well, septic or final finish sanding and painting. In short, $100 a square foot may get you a house, but it will not get you a home.

We encounter this discussion with clients every day.

At Birch & Beam, we do not endeavor to be the cheapest contractor. We endeavor to remain in business for years to come. We endeavor to build your sanctuary and then receive the opportunity to do the same for your children and their children. We endeavor to be the contractor you can trust with your family’s future. We endeavor to build for you the home you deserve.
